Per Ingvar Haukeland

Per Ingvar Haukeland, Professor Ecophilosophy/Ecopedagogy, University of South-Eastern Norway, linked to the Outdoor Life Studies program. Haukeland has worked with the philosopher Arne Naess for close to 20 years, including the books Life’s Philosophy (2003) and Deep Joy: Into the depths of deep ecology (in Norwegian). He has worked for 15 years as a center leader and senior participatory action-researcher at the Centre for NatureCulture-based innovation at Telemark Research Institute. He is currently researching developing a sense of indigeneity, learning from the Sami, Kven and Norse traditions in Norway, as ways of bridging the past and the future in ways that are both broadly sustainable and land-responsiveness.

Karina Miotto

Karina Miotto is a Deep Ecology specialist, trained at Gaia Education, Sharing Nature, and Schumacher College, learning from luminaries like Stephan Harding, Joanna Macy, and John Seed. Deep Ecology shapes her work, bridging logic and intuition across workshops, mentoring, activism, writing, and academic research. Over 10 years, she has applied this philosophy to climate change adaptation, including a project in the Australian Alps with La Trobe University. Karina also fundraised for the Gondwana Foundation to protect the Daintree Rainforest and published CHANGEMAKERS: The Courage to Transform the World. Since 2019, she has mentored changemakers, empowering transformative action.

Chaitali Chaudhari

Facilitator-in-Learning

Chaitali Chaudhari is an ecological designer and educator dedicated to fostering meaningful connections between people and landscapes. Founder of Land Insight, she brings together her background in architecture, regenerative design, and ecological thinking to inspire respect for the land. A graduate of Schumacher College’s MA in Ecological Design Thinking, her dissertation and work explores the Goethean approach to architecture, emphasizing place-based and more-than-human responsiveness. With hands-on experience in vernacular eco-architecture and permaculture, Chaitali integrates practical knowledge and cultural sensitivity. Through foodwize, she extends her passion into sustainable food systems, creating holistic learning experiences for urban consumers.

Living with the Land Short Course

About

This course will explore the connections between humans and the land from within a deep ecological perspective. Deep ecology is a direction within ecophilosophy, ecopsychology and cultural ecology that opens the world of sensuous and imaginative co-respondence with the powers of the land as HOME (eco). It uses both science and philosophy to explore the material and spiritual aspects of our responsiveness to these powers. This is important to be attentive to whether one is an educator, architect, permaculturalist, poet or artist, or simply seeking a deeper connection to and sustainable living in the land one inhabits together with the more-than-human. It brings further the work of Arne Naess on deep ecology. The course is also in honor of the late Stephan Harding, whose classic text Animate Earth (2006), opens an animistic door to uniting depth psychology, science and ecophilosophy through Gaia, the Earth goddess. The course combines both practical and theoretical perspectives, which will also delve into various ways of understanding the land and landscape as a way of living, and ground the course in the broader and mythopoetic image of a Tree of Life.

The course will have six sessions that gets at various ecological depths of the Tree of Life:

  1. INTRODUCTION. Seed, soil and soul. Depth of attention.
  2. Roots. Depth of experience
  3. Trunk: Depth of awareness.
  4. Branches: Depth of Consequence.
  5. Flowers/leaves. Depth of transition
  6. SUMMARY. Fruits: Depth of learning

The course will take place for a 2-hour gathering, and then exercises in between sessions and discussions among the participants. The participants will create what we for this course call a Gaia-philosophy.
